Rothschild Book of Hours

1500-05
Manuscript (Additional MS. 35313), 235 x 165 mm
British Library, London

This Book of Hours, known as the 'London Rothschild Hours' or the 'Hours of Joanna I of Castile', was made for a woman and a member of the Spanish court or royal family, perhaps Joanna I (1479-1555), Queen of Castile and Aragon [Joanna the Mad], who married Philip I the Handsome (d. 1506), son of Mary of Burgundy. It contains 237 parchment folios.

The miniature on folio 34 shows the building of the Tower of Babel. Notable is the scaffolding, the ladders and the crane worked by a tread-wheel inside the building. It is one of the many medieval manuscript illustrations showing buildings under construction.
