Mosaic decoration of the San Zeno Chapel

822
Mosaic
Santa Prassede, Rome

The cross-shaped chapel of San Zeno, with its original opus sectile floor, was constructed by Paschal as a mausoleum for his mother, Theodora Episcopa. It is the only chapel in Rome entirely lined with mosaics and contains the alleged pillar upon which Christ was scourged.

The picture shows the mosaic above the entrance to the chapel of San Zeno, an endowment by Paschal I. The window over the entrance is framed by two rows of busts of saints. The inner row shows the Virgin and Christ Child in the middle along with two male and eight female saints, while in the outer row half portraits of twelve apostles are grouped around a portrait of Christ.
