The façade of the Santa Maria in Trastevere dates in part from the thirteenth century, in part from the early fourteenth. It depicts an enthroned Madonna and Child in the form of a Madonna Lactans in the centre, and virgins with oil lamps approaching from left and right. Restorations have distorted the original figures of the virgins.
