Armorial bearings - symbols identifying individuals and families - began as military insignia to be displayed on shields. A nobleman is represented in the stained glass window that he donated to Chartres Cathedral in the early 13th century. His arms identify him as belonging to the family of Beaumont-sur-Oise.
