The art of stained glass and the form of the rose window were both inventions of the Middle Ages. The spectacular north rose of the Notre-Dame de Paris contains the Virgin and Child in the centre. The three outer rings show Old Testament prophets and kings. It has been calculated that the window contains 50.000 separate pieces of glass.
