A high point of French High Gothic stained glass is the series of windows in the choir of St.-Ouen Abbey in Rouen. Here the combination of grisaille and colour glazing was developed into the standard technique. The chapels of the ambulatory were given grisaille windows with coloured borders and a central coloured element (heads, foliage). Placed centrally, the full-colour figure panels occupy about half of the windows, forming a broad band of colour that stretches around the whole outer shell of the ground floor of the choir.
