Plaque with a Portrait of Robertus Junius

1660
Tin-glazed earhtenware, 17 x 14 cm
Museum Van Het Boek, The Hague

A series of plaques bearing portraits of local ministers of the Reformed Church was made at one of the Delftware potteries in 1660. This example shows the portrait of Robertus Junius, who was for many years the Reformed minister on the island of Formosa, which was then a Dutch possession. From 1645 to 1653 he was the pastor in Delft. The painter used an engraving of 1645 by Chrispijn van Queborn (1604-1652).
