The domed octagonal Lateran Baptistery stands somewhat apart from the Basilica of San Giovanni in Laterano, to which it has become joined by later construction. This baptistery was founded by Pope Sixtus III in 440, on a 4th-century structure, retaining its octagonal ground plan. Although the Baptistery was subject to an elaborate restoration during the pontificate of Urban VIII after plans of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the original character of the building remained the same. The octagonal structure, centred upon the large octagonal basin for full immersions, provided a model for others throughout Italy.
