Cathedral, Speyer

Speyer under the Salian Emperors became one of the most important places in medieval Germany. The monumental Speyer Cathedral was begun between 1027 and 1030 under Emperor Conrad II and was completed under Henry IV. It was destroyed in the seventeenth century, but restored to the present form in the nineteenth century. The western part (shown here) which still stands today is faithful to the original Salian conception.
