Hugo of Semur ascended the abbot's throne at Cluny in 1049. His new church. His new church of Saint-Croix-Notre-Dame at La-Charité-sur-Loire was inspired by the second church of Cluny, and it became a forerunner of Cluny III. The only parts surviving from the Middle Ages are the transept with its cupola, the four outer apses of the chevet, an ambulatory with chapels and a west tower. The photo shows a view of the choir.
