San Miniato al Monte (St Minias on the Mountain) is a basilica standing atop one of the highest points in Florence. It one of the finest Romanesque structures in Tuscany.
The façade of the San Miniato can be dated about 1090. The characteristic form of it is distantly reminiscent of antique architecture, with its round arches carried on columns and its triangular pediment. The colouristic effect obtained by the contrast between off-white marble and the dark, greenish, almost black, marble used to emphasize the architectural members is a feature of this Romanesque style which does not appear to have a parallel in antiquity.
