Priory, Lindisfarne (Holy Island)

In the 7th century, Irish monks established Lindisfarne monastery on the Holy Island in Northumbria. It became a great Christian centre under Bishop Cuthbert (died 687). In the early 8th century, the famous illuminated manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels, an illustrated Latin copy of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, was made probably at Lindisfarne.

The monastery suffered a devastating raid by the Vikings in 793. The Benedictines in Durham rebuilt it at the end of the 11th century and established a priory, the ruins of which can be seen today.

The photo shows the ruins of the priory church.
