The Imperial Palace in Gelnhausen was founded. In 1180, the imperial palace at Gelnhausen was the venue for the great imperial court or Hoftag of Gelnhausen, at which Henry the Lion was put on trial in his absence and his imperial fiefs were redistributed.
The ruin of the palace is regarded as one of the most beautiful and artistically important imperial palaces in Germany. Frederick I received it before 1170 as a fief. Several German emperors are known to have resided here, and on several occasions it was used to hold the imperial diet. The ruin was restored in the nineteenth century.
