In the west of the Frankish empire, the region between the Loire and the Dordogne, two main group of Romanesque buildings can be distinguished: the hall churches and the domed churches. Sainte-Radegonde at Talmont-sur-Gironde is an example of the latter group. The church stands on the edge of the cliff overlooking the Gironde estuary. It has an elegant apse and a richly carved portal on its transept.
