In the west of the Frankish empire, the region between the Loire and the Dordogne, two main group of Romanesque buildings can be distinguished: the hall churches and the domed churches. Notre-Dame at Cunault, built during the first half of the twelfth century, is one of the lightest and most imposing hall churches. The complexity of the layout of the building suggests that its design changed more than once.
