There are centrally planned buildings from the fifth and sixth centuries in the south of France. The centrally planned building was rediscovered in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, along with a renewed appreciation of the beauty of classical Roman form. Thus the chapels built in Venasque, Rieux-Minervois, and Montmajour are centrally planned.

The chapel of Sainte-Croix in Montmajour is a cemetery chapel based on a four-sided apse. It is a perfect ashlar building in which the pointing is hardly noticeable. The central interior is high and square and has four lower apses attached to it, one along the entire width of each side. Adjoining the western apse is a square entrance hall.
