Abbey of Sant'Antimo, Montalcino (Tuscany)

The monastery of Sant'Antimo was the swan song of the great medieval monasteries that lived according to the Benedictine Rule. Though it was followed in this region by other masterpieces such as the Cistercian San Galgano dating from the beginning of the thirteenth century, none of them can even begin to approach this building for its effect of unity, power and size. Signs of imminent decline of this era can be seen on the façade of Sant'Antimo, which was never finished.
