Santo Stefano, Bologna

The basilica of Santo Stefano encompasses a complex of religious edifices in the city of Bologna. (It is also known as "The Seven Churches.") It includes the Church of the Holy Sepulchre which, according to tradition, was built over a temple of the goddess Isis by St Petronius, a bishop of the city during the 5th century. (It was rebuilt in the 12th century.) This church is a deliberate evocation of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem.

The present photo shows the Piazza Santo Stefano. The façade of the Church of the Crucifix (Chiesa del Crucifisso) is in the centre, at left the Basilica del Santo Sepolcro and the Basilica dei Santi Vitale e Agricola can be seen.
