The Cathedral of Ripon was constructed according to the plans of Roger of Pont l'Évêque (1154-1181), Archbishop of York. It is a smaller version of his cathedral which has been destroyed and is known to us only from excavations. In the choir, early French Gothic buildings are copied in a faithful way.
