San Tirso, Sahagún (León)

The church of San Tirso has survived in a remarkably good condition, even if extensive restoration work has been necessary. The building was started before 1123 with the main apse, the lower sections of which consist of dressed stone. Brick was not used until a height of about one meter above ground level had been reached, from that stage on it was used almost exclusively. The imposing four-storey tower with its pyramidal-shaped base rises up from a narrow, barrel-vaulted extended bay of the apse. The tower collapsed in 1949, it was reconstructed following the original design.
