During the building of Lausanne Cathedral, begun in the 1160s, a Gothic ambulatory, reminiscent of the cathedral of Sens, was constructed that at this time was very unusual in the region. When the inner choir was begun, the builders looked even farther west: the three-storied wall elevation, which has a real triforium and a recessed clerestory, shows similarities to that of Canterbury Cathedral, where the originals of many other forms at Lausanne can also be found. Lausanne Cathedral is the oldest Gothic cathedral outside France after Canterbury.
