The restoration of the cathedral choir in Auxerre, begun in 1215, echoes the pattern of Chartres with its three-storied wall elevation, though it is smaller than its model. The columnar piers, much more delicately constructed than those of Chartres, are markedly thin. In order to prevent the individual clusters of shafts from protruding too far, the shafts of the wall ribs stand not in front of the wall, but in box-like niches set within the wall. This idea was not essentially new, but it was only at Auxerre that this system was used consistently throughout the building.
