Gothic secular architecture appeared in particularly magnificent forms in the Netherlands. Town halls, hospitals, and other charitable institutions were built in Gothic style. One of the earliest surviving monuments of the latter kind is the large infirmary of the Van de Bijloke Cistercian abbey in Ghent, dating from 1228-29. It has the dimensions of a major town hall.
