The Franciscan church of San Lorenzo in Vicenza was built in the years following 1281. Externally, the most notable feature is the Lombard screen-façade with its graceful, stone-faced blind arcading into which a massive sculptured portal was inserted in 1342-44 by Andriolo de Santi. The brick and terracotta detailing completes a network of relationships that spreads not only through the Veneto but throughout the Lombard and Emilian plain. Nevertheless, despite the linkages of detail, none of the relevant late-thirteenth-century parallels can rival San Lorenzo in Vicenza in its quiet harmonies. The photo shows the façade of the church.
