Palazzo Lamba Doria, Genoa

The Palazzo Lamba Doria was given to Lamba Doria (or D'Oria, c. 1245-1323), an admiral of the Republic of Genoa. He defeated the Venetians in the battle of Curzola in 1298, where he took prisoner the admiral Andrea Dandolo (who subsequently committed suicide) and, according to a tradition, Marco Polo. Andrea Doria was his descendant.

In the palazzo, the ground floor loggia with its fine polygonal columns recalls the Bolognese arcades, although the outflow of the main stairs indicates its private nature. The four storeys of striped white marble and black stone façade are clearly defined by intervening cornices and are enlivened by the pointed 'quadrifore' (mullioned windows with four lights) which repeat the shapes and rhythm of the arcade beneath.
