In Wells Cathedral in the 1290s an octagonal chapter house was built, one of the most beautiful in England. Its basic form is the richly decorated vault. Like a palm-tree, the sturdy central column supports the expansive dome of the vault on which countless closely packed tierceron ribs stretch upwards.
