Marienburg Castle, Malbork (Poland)

Marienburg was the main castle of the Teutonic Knights. The foundation stone was laid in the second half of the 13th century. Apart from its extensive fortifications, the castle consists of two main parts, the Upper and the Middle Castle, linked by a bridge. It was the administrative centre of the Teutonic Knights, from 1309 the seat of the grand master.

The castle combines elements of monastic, military, and palace architecture. The palace of the grand master, situated at the western corner of the Middle Castle and projecting beyond the wall of the castle, is one of the finest pieces of secular architecture from this period.
