The abbey church of Saint-Ouen, 137 meters long and 33 meters high, achieves the dimensions of the gigantic episcopal churches of High Gothic. The Benedictine monks there wanted to surpass the neighbouring cathedral. The rebuilding of the church began in 1318 and was completed only in the 16th century. However, despite the many interruptions to the building work, all the architects up to the end of the Middle Ages kept to the original plan of the early 14th century.
