Construction of the huge interior of the parish church San Petronio in Bologna began in 1390. The first two of the six bays was completed by 1400, the remaining bays were completed in 1525 and provided with an interim south apse and north façade. After that, work was abandoned. The planned transept and choir were never begun. But, although incomplete, San Petronio is an impressive development of Tuscan and Lombard church architecture. The spacial breadth, elegant clarity, and a skilful use of materials indicate the creativity of Gothic architecture in Italy.
