A series of wooden roofs is one of the Veneto's most interesting contribution to Italian fourteenth-century architecture. The most ambitious of them is the extraordinary polylobe construction hanging, dark, and low, above the short, wide nave of San Fermo Maggiore in Verona. Red and black diamonds and diaper designs upon the ridges of the paneling, the painted busts of saints in the two vertical arcadings on each wing, and scroll designs in red, grey, black, and blue, add gleams of colour which were once undoubtedly much brighter.
