This Dominican church was begun c. 1303, although work continued throughout the century and the nave was not completed for four hundred years. The massing of the choir, the transepts, and the campanile is one of the finest architectural achievements of the mendicant orders. There is a notable compactness in the movement from the rectilinear transepts through the inner pair of absidal chapels to the great central polygon. The volumes of the projecting side chapels are cunningly related to the stepped-up rectilinear masses backing them.

The outer form of the church is an accurate expression of the main internal volumes.
