The Lady Chapel at the east end of Wells Cathedral was built by Thomas of Witney, who worked also in Exeter. He was active in Wells since 1323, the Lady Chapel was completed by 1326. Unlike all comparable chapels in England, this chapel has a ground plan that is not a rectangle but an elongated octagon. The vault, rising up like a dome, is decorated with a star of ribs. The architect had the task of connecting this octagonal space with the rectangular ambulatory around the choir. The solution was a subtle interpenetration of spaces.
