The foundation stone of the Cathedral (Seu) of Barcelona was laid in 1298. This huge building is one of the most impressive monuments of Catalan Gothic. The master mason Jaume Fabre constructed a broad nave with aisles (of much the same height as the nave) which leads to an ambulatory at the east end. Massive cluster piers punctuate the nave bays, whose vault was completed only in 1448. Galleries over the chapels add to the complexity of the interior. The crypt of the cathedral was completed in 1337. The photo shows the nave looking east. View the ground plan and the cross section of Cathedral of Santa Eulália, Barcelona. | |
