Karlstein Castle, outside Prague, was built for the Emperor Charles IV between 1347 and 1355. Designed as a royal residence, not as a fortress, it still preserves its imperial apartments, notably the Chapel of the Holy Rood, with painting by Master Theodoric and walls inlaid with precious stone.
