In 1469-74 the Romanesque Cathedral of St. Blaise in Braunschweig (in English: Brunswick) was extended by adding a new double north aisle. The expressive modernity of the new aisle with the special columns contrasts strongly with the older building. The twisting effect is emphasized by the fact that the direction of turn alternates between clockwise and anticlockwise.
