In the first half of the sixteenth century, Toulouse was a centre for the new classicism. Humanists rebuilt their houses there in the new manner as early as 1530. Though little remains of this work today, we can form some idea of the manner current at that time in Toulouse from the Hôtel de Bernuy, in which traces of Gothic influences are still visible, but which is strikingly original in its design.
