The reconstruction of the Brussels marketplace, destroyed by the French in 1695, demonstrated the persistence of traditional styles in southern Netherlands. The guild houses that were newly built in 1700 were completely modeled on their historical predecessors: narrow fronts fully taken up by window apertures, richly decorated to stress the vertical lines and with highly ornate decoration, were still reminiscent of late Gothic bourgeois architecture. It was not until the eighteenth century that the French style of academic classicism penetrated to the southern Netherlands.
