Major eighteenth-century French monasteries introduced a light, regular sense of space in many towns. In Caen, the monastic buildings of Abbaye-aux-Hommes, flanking the masterful Romanesque church, were rebuild in the eighteenth century. They were articulated in grandiose fashion, featuring, in addition to the woodwork in the refectory, a lavish staircase.
