The subject of Adam and Eve preoccupied Jan Gossart over the course of his thirty-year career. This theme occurs at least nine times in Gossart's painted and graphic oeuvre, but none of these renderings is dated.

One of Gossart's most popular pictures was the devotional image representing Christ as the Man of Sorrows. This theme provided an opportunity for the artist to render a muscular nude body and slightly bent-over torso based on the Belvedere Torso.
