Religious paintings form a significant part of the work Holbein produced in Basle. Holbein's early religious works show the influence of Dürer, Grünewald and Hans Baldung Grien (e.g. the Adam and Eve of 1517 is based on a woodcut by Dürer of 1511). In the early 1520s Holbein achieved a truer balance between north and south. The two shutters of an altarpiece (The Passion Altar) conclude this early phase of Holbein's development.
