9. Exaltation of the Cross
Legend of the True Cross by Piero della Francesca

Heraclius wished to bring the cross back to Jerusalem after his victory over the Persian King. But a divine power prevents the emperor from making his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. So Heraclius, setting aside all pomp and magnificence has carried the cross barefoot up to the walls of Jerusalem. There he and his train are met by a group of men who kneel down before the cross in veneration.
