GIOVANNI DEL BIONDO
(active 1356-1399 in Florence)

Madonna del Latte

c. 1377
Tempera on panel, gold ground, 81 x 61 cm
Private collection

Comaring with his early paintings, Giovanni del Biondo's mature works are better defined by a lighter palette, a less somber mood, and an increased delight in surface ornament, as visible here in the exceptionally beautiful gold cloth in which the Christ Child is enveloped. The adherence of the panel to Florentine Trecento models, particularly to works by the Master of the Dominican Effigies, is remarkable.
