Cathedral, Szombathely

Hungary's third largest church, major work by Melchior Hefele (Hefele Menyhért in Hungary), was built for Bishop János Szily in the place of the demolished castle church and palace, on Roman ruins. It is laid out in the form of a Latin Cross, with an extended sanctuary and short transepts. This is where Adolf Kunc and Loránd Eötvös repeated the pendulum experiment proving the rotation of the Earth. In the Second World War the cathedral was seriously damaged during the bombing raid on the city - only a small portion of the beautiful ceiling frescoes and altar paintings could be saved. The periodic restoration of the temple continues to this day.
