San Pier Maggiore Altarpiece: Adoring Saints (detail)

1370-71
Egg tempera on wood
National Gallery, London

The detail shows the church of San Pier Maggiore held by St Peter. The church of the Benedictine convent of San Pier Maggiore was one of the oldest in Florence. During 1783 renovations caused part of the building to collapse, and it was mostly destroyed in 1784, although the façade remained.
