This polyptych was originally located in the convent of the Poor Clares in via dei Malcontenti in Florence. In 1950, the altarpiece was moved to the Church of Santi Apostoli e Biagio in place of an altarpiece representing Pentecost by Orcagna. In the centre of the painting the Virgin and the Child are represented. At her sides are Sts Clare and Catherine of Alexandria and two angels. The four figures on the side panels are Sts Lawrence, John the Baptist, Francis and Stephen. At the centre of the predella the Adoration of the Magi is depicted.
Jacopo's works show weaknesses in spatial projection and in the postures and organization of the figures. In addition, his mimetic and expressive range is limited. The idiom taken over from his brothers Andrea and Nardo became increasingly schematic and ossified. It is significant that until 1383 almost all the more important artistic works were produced in collaboration with Niccolò di Pietro Gerini.
