JACOPO DI CIONE

Virgin and Child Enthroned with Saints

1370s
Tempera on panel, gold ground, 46 x 26 cm
Private collection

The saints flanking the Virgin and Child are Anthony Abbot, Mary Magdalene, Catherine of Alexandria, and a Bishop Saint, surrounded by eight angels.

This is an early painting by Jacopo di Cione, who was influenced by his brother Nardo, and by Giottino, one of the most prominent painters in Florence in the third quarter of the 14th century.

The painting was probably the central panel of a triptych, now separated from its lateral wings.
