JEAN DE LIÈGE
(active 1361-1381)

Charles V

1375-80
Stone, height 195 cm
Musée du Louvre, Paris

This statue of Charles V is probably an accurate reproduction of that originally in the staircase of the Louvre which no longer survived. The head of Charles is handsome, his expression benevolent, and the facial features clearly resemble those in countless other portraits of the king seen in the dedication pictures of his manuscripts.
