In the 13th century there was already a chapel dedicated to John the Baptist at this location. In the same century the chapel was elevated to parish church. In the course of the 14th century this chapel was expanded with a choir, a transept and side aisles. In the second half of the 15th century, the church was then expanded into a full-fledged house of worship. The addition by Antoon I Keldermans transformed the parish church into a proper but sober Gothic church.
