Equestrian Statuette of Ferdinando I de' Medicic. 1600
Bronze with remains of red-gold paint, height 64 cm
Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna
Giambologna executed the monument to the Grand Duke Cosimo I de' Medici, which was placed in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence in 1594. Cosimo's son Ferdinando commissioned his own statue from Giambologna about 1600, it was finished by Giambologna's pupil Pietro Tacca and erected in the Piazza Santissima Annunziata in 1608.
The bronze statuette by Susini is closely related to the monumental statue, and it was probably made as diplomatic gift.
