Hercules and the Centaur

c. 1600
Bronze
Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna

Following Vincenzo de' Rossi's example, Giambologna executed some of the scenes from the series of twelve labours of Hercules. However, by contrast to De' Rossi, he never had any intention of finishing a whole series. Antonio Susini made the bronze Hercules and the Centaur after the design by Giambologna. It is an open question whether this bronze is a reduction of Giambologna's marble or the marble is an expansion of the earlier bronze.
